What Arcana Unleashed Means for Spellcasters — 8 New Subclasses & Growing Magic Items
Arcana Unleashed lands in September 2026, and while we don’t have the full card list yet, Wizards of the Coast has confirmed enough to start planning. Eight new subclasses. New spells. New feats. And a system that changes how magic items work in your campaign permanently.
Here’s what spellcasters and DMs need to know right now.
Eight New Subclasses — What We Know
WotC has confirmed eight new subclasses focused on spellcasting classes and arcane builds. Full details are still rolling out through the preview season, but the emphasis is clearly on magic-forward characters — wizards, sorcerers, warlocks, and any class that leans hard into the arcane.
This is the first major subclass expansion since the 2024 core rulebook revision, which means these subclasses are built from the ground up for the current ruleset — not conversions or updates of older options.
What to watch for as previews continue: subclasses that interact with the growing magic items system (see below) will likely be the most interesting mechanically, since the two systems were clearly designed to work together.
Growing Magic Items — The Biggest Addition
This is the mechanic that will reshape how DMs think about loot.
Arcana Unleashed introduces an official system where magic items can increase in power as your character advances. The exact trigger conditions and power thresholds will vary by item, but the core concept is that a magic item found at level 4 doesn’t have to feel obsolete at level 12.
DMs have been house-ruling versions of this for years. Soulbound items, attunement upgrades, milestone-based unlocks — the desire for magic items that grow with the party is one of the most common topics in DM forums. Having an official framework means players and DMs are working from the same ruleset, which removes a lot of table negotiation.
For DMs running long campaigns: this is worth planning around now. If there are items your party already loves, think about how you’d want them to evolve. When the book drops you’ll have official mechanics to hang those ideas on.
New Spells and Feats
Beyond subclasses, Arcana Unleashed adds new spells and feats specifically for magic-focused builds. Details are still previewing, but the direction is clear: if your character is built around casting, this book will have something for you at multiple levels of play.
Feats in the 2024 ruleset function as meaningful build choices rather than minor bonuses. New arcane feats from Arcana Unleashed should give spellcasters more distinct identity and more ways to specialize within their school or style.
New Backgrounds
Arcana Unleashed also adds backgrounds tailored to magic-origin characters — the kind of backstory options that make sense for someone who grew up in a wizard’s tower, served in an arcane institution, or discovered their magic through a traumatic or unusual event.
Backgrounds in the 2024 rules grant ability score increases and a starting feat, so the new arcane backgrounds will shape characters from level 1 in a way previous edition backgrounds didn’t.
When Does It Drop?
Arcana Unleashed releases in September 2026 for $49.99 as part of D&D’s Season of Magic. The companion adventure Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall ($29.99) drops alongside it, featuring the Red Wizards of Thay and designed to pair with the book’s high-magic themes.
D&D Reference Card Decks for spells, monsters, and magic items land in August 2026 — the first Season of Magic product and a useful warm-up to what Arcana Unleashed delivers in September.
